Two new somewhat high-profile covers of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” have hit the web in as many days: Paramore’s Hayley Williams posted her excellent Sunday afternoon solo rendition of the hit song on Twitvid and now Lissie Maurus, a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles by way of Rock Island, Illinois, has given her own alt-country twist to the dancefloor favorite.
This Gaga cover is likely meant to promote Lissie’s forthcoming single “In Sleep,” which will hit iTunes and elsewhere on April 5, and can be streamed on her MySpace page here. This is a brilliant take, regardless of the possible promotional impetus behind it, and it’s accompanied by a surprisingly high-quality video to boot.
On a side note, one of my big regrets of last year was not jumping on the Lissie hype wagon. With only her debut EP, Why You Runnin’, on the shelves, she’s by far one of the most promising young songwriters around.
