Aside from a few illustrated flourishes in the Staves’ “Mexico” video, this clip marks the trio’s first full-fledged animation effort. A shame, really, given how well it offers a surreal complement to this cut’s bucolic themes. Animation being almost inherently rhythmic, these visuals help bring the track’s slow-building percussive elements more into the foreground, too. Watch/hear “Winter Trees” above — it’s a fine introduction to the group that also sets the stage for the album‘s particularly transcendent second half.
