Beck continues his run of impressive covers into the new year with Plastic Ono Band classic “Love,” a one-off cut recorded for a new Valentine’s Day compilation, Sweetheart 2014. In stark relief to December’s murder ballad with Charlotte Gainsbourg, this one takes a romantic turn, keeping much of John Lennon’s sparse original arrangement intact with an added drum part and swooning harmony vocals underlining the take’s subtle buildup. It’s a solid, reverent rendition, not to mention a fine way to bide our time before Beck’s acoustic record arrives later this year.
