Speaking of Ben Gibbard, his wife, Zooey Deschanel, joined Conan O’Brien and She & Him bandmate M. Ward on TBS last night for a pair of cover songs: Screamin‘ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You” (which was just released as a single) and holiday classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
While the former tune found the pair alone on the Conan stage, bravely filling the space with only Ward’s sparse yet nuanced guitar work and Zooey’s stadium-ready vocal chops, the latter shines in a laid-back dressing room setting with “65 of [Coco’s] closest friends.” O’Brien himself joins in on his custom acoustic guitar (complete with personalized fretboard inlay!).
