Perhaps I’m late to the party on this one, but BlakRoc, a collaboration between the Black Keys, Mos Def, RZA, Q-Tip, Jim Jones, Ludacris, Billy Danze, the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Nicole Wray, Pharoahe Monch, and Noe, have posted a brilliant 8-episode web series on their site and YouTube.
With names like those listed above, this project certainly didn’t need any more hype, and that’s precisely why this behind-the-scenes footage is so fulfilling to watch. The uncertainty as to what the project will be or whether it will ever even exist leads to a breaking down of the fourth wall that you only get in the best music documentaries (e.g. Wilco in I Am Trying to Break Your Heart and Bob Dylan in Don’t Look Back). Of course, it’s also just fun to watch how well some artists function while smoking copious amounts of weed (see episode 5).
