Famed graphic novel, comic book, science fiction, and screenplay writer Neil Gaiman teamed up with his girlfriend Amanda Palmer (of the Dresden Dolls) and English actor Bill Nighy for an 8-minute film that recently aired in the UK on television. Thankfully, the short has now promptly landed on the Internet as well for those of us on the other side of the pond to enjoy.
In the film, Statuesque, Nighy plays a daily observer of a group of street performers acting as human statues, one of which is played by Palmer, who actually made a living as a human statue long before the Dresden Dolls blew up. The film, written and directed by Gaiman, follows Nighy’s character’s daily routine, from ogling at the performers in the street to scrapbooking with binoculars in tow and pseudo-stalking them at a bar, until a few unusual events lead to a romantic ending with a twist.
Palmer and Nighy have great chemistry onscreen and—though Palmer did not score music for the short as well—the soundtrack meshes perfectly with Gaiman’s playful directorial style.
