A quote from Calvin Johnson in an old fan-made documentary about Modest Mouse comes to mind upon hearing both their latest material and unlikely news that Big Boi is producing their next LP: “Part of what’s great about them: they’re so unpredictable.” Well, let’s add their impressive take on Buddy Holly for a forthcoming tribute record to the mix of surprises from Isaac Brock and friends of late. Streaming above (via NJ Underground), is Modest Mouse’s transformation of Holly’s ’50s classic “That’ll Be the Day” into what could easily be confused for a present-day Brock original, à la Ugly Casanova’s “Here’s to Now.”
