Nellie McKay Unveils New Album, Stars in Indie Love Story

Recorded in Jamaica, Los Angeles, New York, and Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains,Nellie McKay’s follow-up to last year’s Doris Day tribute LP, Normal as Blueberry Pie, and first album of all-original songs since 2007’s Obligatory Villagers, has been announced for a September 28 release. Back in May, McKay revealed in an interview with Lehigh Valley Music that the album, titled Home Sweet Mobile Home, was “kind of in a state of mass confusion” due to its varied range of influences, but David Byrne, her Imelda Marcos concept album collaborator (stream their tune below), was offering support as “the godfather” to the project, recommending albums for inspiration and acting as “a guiding force and spirit.”

I have no idea how this album happened,” McKay said of the 13-track LP. “I guess I was looking for a sound to reflect our shrinking world and the bleed of culture crossing all kinds of borders.”

Before the album drops this fall, however, McKay will record music for and star as struggling New York City singer-songwriter Ramona in Downtown Express, an independent feature film in which her character falls in love with a Russian musician visiting town for a month on a Juilliard scholarship, played by real-life virtuoso violinist Philippe Quint.
