White Stripes, Desaparecidos Prep Vinyl Reissues

**Update: More info on the WS reissues has arrived.

Fun fact: Not only are vinyl sales still growing while compact disc numbers continue to plummet, but — according to a What Hi-Hi report — turntables are now outselling CD players. Needless to say, it’s a perfect time for CD-era musicians to dust off their old master tapes (if they’re lucky enough to own them) for a reissue or two. Per a pair of recent interviews, the White Stripes and newly reunited Desaparecidos are doing just that.

We’ve known about Jack White’s ambition to reissue the entire (!) White Stripes back catalog via Third Man Records since last summer, but now — about 50 releases later — they’re finally on the way. “[W]e went back in the fall and got the master tapes and cut new vinyl masters right from the tapes,” White told the Detroit Free Press of his plans to put out the first 3 White Stripes records on 180-gram vinyl. “We went back and did the artwork [better] than it had ever been done — we went back to the original photographs.”

As Conor Oberst and the Desaparecidos plan to revisit songs from their sole LPfor this weekend’s reunion gig, guitarist Denver Dalley revealed in an interview with the Round Table that they are prepping a vinyl reissue of 2002’s Read Music/Speak Spanish, as well. (Here’s hoping a promo tour is in order too.)
