ApparatjikWe finally have an explanation for at least one piece of WTFery (the cube) on Apparatjik’s official site, but I’ll leave the music chord equations, Vimeos, and photos to die-hard fans/cryptologists of the Coldplay/Mew/A-Ha side project. Bassist Guy Berryman, Mew’s Jonas Bjerre, Martin Terefe, and A-Ha’s Magne Furuholmen are planning to follow up their free, 9-minute single, “Electric Eye,” with the release of their as-yet-untitled debut album, as well as an unusual live performance in a glass cube.

In a post from his official site, Terefe, aka Martin A, announced that the band’s debut will be released on the first of February (“the same day as their first show”) before also dropping the bizarre bit about a “glass cube” concert. So what’s this David Blaine-esque stunt all about?

Here’s a description from the CTM Festival site (where their inaugural live gig will presumably occur):

Inspired by the Bauhaus movement, the ‘Bauhaus Bühne’, and Lazlo Moholy-Nagy’s work ‘Light-Space-Modulator’ from 1930 in particular, this first ever performance of Apparatjik will take place inside a specially constructed cube at the WMF on Monday, February 1st, 2010.

Okay, somebody please YouTube this thing. (Thanks for the tip, Catherine!)

We posted recently about a 60-second sample of the first single off the debut LP from Apparatjik, a group made up of A-Ha’s Magne Furuholmen, Mew’s Jonas Bjerre, and Coldplay’s Guy Berryman. At that time, we knew the full version would be released today, but not that it would be free and over 9 minutes long. Download “Electric Eye” for the cost of a name and email address here.

Vampire Weekend have already dropped the first single and video off their upcoming second album Contra and I heard from somebody, somewhere that the song “Horchata” leaked, but you can now also listen to snippets from every song on the album over at 30-second leak blog Amazon.com.

Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman, Mew’s Jonas Bjerre, and A-Ha’s Magne Furuholmen have only tested the waters for their new group Apparatjik thus far, officially releasing only one song (“Ferreting” on the soundtrack to Bruce Parry’s BBC show Amazon), launching a cryptic site adorned with abstract photography, videos, and random WTFery, plus dropping a few intriguing instrumentals on YouTube, Vimeo, and elsewhere (check out “Frozen Fingers” here, or “Flum” thataway).

According to fansite Coldplaying.com, however, Apparatjik are finally prepping their forthcoming debut album and the first single drops a week from today. What’s more, Kensaltown Records, presumably the label handling the band’s upcoming releases, sent out a free download of the single, “Electric Eye,” to fans, so we finally have a taste of what’s on the way from Berryman and company (with vocals!).
