While the Decemberists’ next album, The King Is Dead, won’t be hitting shelves until January 18, Colin Meloy and Co. are ready to share the first single right now: “Down by the Water,” a Gillian Welch-featuring single previewed by Meloy in various live settings recently, was just posted on their official website. Download the free track in exchange for an email addy above.
While the Decemberists’ follow-up to 2009’s The Hazards of Love is set for January of next year — complete with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck guesting on 3 new tracks — Colin Meloy hasn’t been too shy to share a few previews on recent solo acoustic dates. Most recently, Meloy performed on KEXP’s CMJ stage over the weekend, where he played “June Hymn,” “Down by the Water,” and “Rise to Me” at the intimate gathering.
Thanks to YouTube users rac3m and codyswanson, we have some nice quality footage of the new tunes, so put on your favorite pair of horn-rimmed glasses and check out the clips below or at the links above.
If you’re familiar with any of the illustrations on Decemberists albums, posters, t-shirts, or Colin Meloy solo records, then you’ve already gotten a taste of Carson Ellis’ work.
Ellis is Meloy’s wife, Decemberists collaborator, and soon-to-be co-author of a children’s book, which the pair have been working on for quite a few years.
