Watch: David Bazan Plays Southern Souls Session

Southern Souls’ Mitch Fillion met up with former Pedro the Lion leader David Bazan recently for an acoustic, bass, and empty bucket-backed set in a Toronto bar. Check out a Take Away Show-style video of Bazan & Co. performing inspired takes on “Level With Yourself” and “People” — both of which appear on his new album, Strange Negotiations — above.

New David Bazan - “Wolves at the Door”

Last fall, ex-Pedro the Lion leader David Bazan asked fans for help completing his sophomore solo effort, Strange Negotiations, by requesting donations to offset costs that might delay the release in exchange for a shout-out in the album liner notes and an “I Helped Bazan Make A Record” shirt. Now the 10-track LP is in the can, set for release on May 24, and ready to preview via “Wolves at the Door,” a promising allegorical ode to financial crises, love, and more streaming above (click the arrow for a free MP3).

Two fan-funded album projects have crossed my radar in as many weeks: First up, we mentioned that Marissa Nadler was raising cash to help pay for her next LP by selling a 17-track covers album on Etsy, but now the singer-songwriter is seeking a bit more support (about $3k as of this post) to secure a professional studio for a 2-week session in January. For pledge options that include digital, physical, and autographed copies of the future album, as well as higher priced donations that come bundled with custom songs, demos, and personalized concerts, click here.

Pedro the Lion’s David Bazan also has a potentially fan-backed solo record in the works. Although Bazan has received some financial backing from indie label Barsuk Records, completing the project in a timely manner — without having to tour to raise more cash — has become an issue. According to his website, “the songs are all there, recording is underway,” but buying a copy now for $35 or $45 will keep sessions alive while earning you an “I Helped Bazan Make A Record” T-shirt, your name in the liner notes, and a CD or vinyl copy of the record. Earlier today, Crawdaddy mentioned some excellent front row footage by Urban Agrarian of Minneapolis duo Peter Wolf Crier reinterpreting Nick Drake’s softer folk version of “Place to Be” as a rowdy garage-rock jam atop a bed of digital delay loops. If that live clip — shot at Madison, Wisconsin’s Memorial Union Terrace last month — doesn’t inspire you to check out Peter Pisano and Brian Moen on tour with Rogue Wave and Midlake this fall, I don’t know what will.

What’s more, upon further inspection of the Urban Agrarian site, which I will certainly be following from here on out, I found that Spencer Wells also filmed/recorded a living room show with Pedro the Lion’s David Bazan recently, in which Bob Dylan’s 1970 New Morning standout “The Man In Me” was performed for an intimate group sans microphones or a PA. Download audio of that entire performance here and check out both videos below (big thanks to Wells and Co. for letting us share these clips):

We’ve been sitting on this bit for a few days now, but the album officially went up for sale only hours ago, so let’s spread the word: Caffé Vita, a coffee shop with four locations in Seattle and one in Olympia, WA, is releasing a compilation album with over 30 Seattle-based artists to benefit Arts Corp and numerous food banks.

For $7, you get the following tracks, plus six more songs (see below) that are still being recorded and will be emailed at a later date.
