The Grammys have gotten so irrelevant at this point that even its most lauded performers can’t make it through a night of their own music. I mean, lots of über-talented artists performed and/or won awards tonight, sure, but we can’t help agreeing with Trent Reznor, Stereogum, or Lance Armstrong of all people, when it comes to calling this behemoth out.
Case in point: the headline. I’m not so naive as to believe that Jay Reatard’s recent passing at the early age of 29 was ever guaranteed recognition by the Grammys, but is it really that much of an imposition on the Recording Academy to include this big name from the “indie” music world in their “In Memoriam” montage?
Good job on including Jay Bennett, Kate McGarrigle, and Vic Chesnutt, Grammys, but they were supposed to be mentioned. (What do you want a cookie?) Anyway, I’ll chill on the commentary, but we’d be remiss in not noting this oversight of one Jimmy Lee Lindsey, Jr. at this year’s irrelevant award show (which is unfortunately hard for relevant people to ignore just yet).
Recent News
My first reaction to the 2010 Grammy nominations, which were announced tonight, was to write off the award show completely (no Dead Weather?), but there are a few categories/nominees of note and Radiohead did bring that killer performance of “15 Step” to last year’s telecast (now available for purchase), so let’s not give them the cold shoulder just yet. In short, Beyoncé got 10 nods (is that a lot when you’re Beyoncé?), while Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift brought the total between the trio of chart-topping pop stars to 23. Check out the full list of nominations here, but here are some less expected ones.
The Lonely Island, aka SNL’s Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, were nominated for best rap/sung collaboration with T-Pain. That’s right: Andy Samberg will face off against Jay-Z, Kanye West, Rihanna, T.I., Justin Timberlake, Keri Hilson, and Ne-Yo. Oh, Grammys, I just can’t quit you. Yes I can.
