Boyzone Member Dies, New Moon OST Leaks, & The Boss Crowd Surfs

Lots of random news hit the internet this weekend, so let’s roundup a few bits that are sure to dominate the news beast tomorrow morning and beyond.

Stephen Gately, of the hugely successful pop group Boyzone, died on Saturday while on vacation in Mallorca, NY Times reports. The cause of Gately’s death is still unknown at this time, but police say there are “no signs of suspicious circumstances.” Gately was only 33 years old. For more on this sad story go here.

When the tracklist to the New Moon soundtrack dropped a few weeks back, Stereogum got their commenters riled up with a “Best Album of 2009?” headline. Well the full OST has leaked this weekend (on YouTube and elsewhere) and let’s just say that it exceeds expectations. Check out Thom Yorke’s “Hearing Damage” here, Bon Iver & St. Vincent’s “Rosyln” here, or the whole thing here.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band played the entire Born in the U.S.A. album and The Boss crowd surfed at the final Giants Stadium concert before its demolition. “It truly looked like the crowd was going to drop him,” RS’s Andy Greene said of Springsteen’s spontaneous leap into the crowd, “but not only did he continue singing while flat on his back, he kept signaling to the band to elongate the songs outro while he made the slow journey back on the hands of hundreds of fans.” For a full review of this epic show go thataway.

Official New Moon Soundtrack Tracklist

I sure am thankful that the New Moon soundtrack tracklisting has been revealed today, as a certain Australian music news site (the inventors of the “Charlie Watts quit the Stones” story) have already started purposefully misreporting that Thom Yorke’s recent 12” leaks are from the film. Well, thanks to the good folks at Consequence of Sound, we now know that Yorke’s contribution is, in fact, called “Hearing Damage” and Bon Iver’s song is actually a duet with Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent.

New Moon Soundtrack Title Track by The Used, w/ Ex-NIN Danny Lohner

We’ve already heard Death Cab For Cutie’s “Meet Me On The Equinox,” the first single off the surprisingly interesting New Moon soundtrack, but we’re still waiting on Thom Yorke or Bon Iver’s highly buzzed-about contributions. Meanwhile, The Used front man Bert McKracken has revealed some details about his band’s song for the film that are quite interesting.

Take 40 reports that The Used’s new track “For You I would,” produced by Danny Lohner, is set to be the title track on the soundtrack. “We did it with Danny Lohner, ex-Nine Inch Nails,” McKracken said. “He’s great to work with. He’s so laid back. You know, like, sometimes I’d go up to his house and didn’t really feel like working so we’d chill out and we’d have a bunch of beers and smoke some pot and then I would feel like working so he’d be right on it and we’d get a bunch of shit done.”

Death Cab´s New Moon Song Hits the Web

Still no audio from Thom Yorke’s or Bon Iver’s contributions to the New Moon soundtrack, but we finally have more than a snippet of Death Cab For Cutie’s lead off single, “Meet Me On The Equinox.” Check out the full song here or embedded below.

Meanwhile, watch Death Cab’s resident Twilight fanboy Chris Walla discuss the “Edward vs. Jacob” debate while Ben Gibbard looks on with a bit of a smirk on his face thataway. Oh, we can’t all be cool like you, Mr. Deschanel.

Bon Iver and Thom Yorke Wrote Songs for New Moon

It sure looks like New Moon director Chris Weitz is trying to build anticipation for the second installment of the Twilight series by boasting about its awesome soundtrack. As previously reported, Thom Yorke has shown interest in submitting a song, as well as Radiohead, Muse, and Band of Skulls. Now HitFix.com confirms (via Pitchfork) that Yorke has in fact submitted a tune, as well as Bon Iver.

Strangely, Weitz claims he hasn’t even listened to the Yorke song yet, but “unless it’s sounds of him belching,” he said, “I think I’ll put it in.”

What’s more, last year’s breakout singer/songwriter dude Bon Iver is also on board. “I think [Bon Iver] is fantastic,” Weitz added. “He says he wrote it for the film, but who ever knows if it might just be something laying around in his cupboard.”

I think he should be happy with the playlist so far, but Weitz is still shooting for a Kings of Leon track as well. No worries though, folks, as soon as he books KOL, I’m sure we’ll be hearing all about it.
