Video: Owen: “Too Many Moons” (Live)

The last time we saw Mike Kinsella perform a song from the new Owen LP, Ghost Town, his dog Oscar adorably interrupted “The Armoire.” Now a new clip of the Chicago singer-songwriter playing on the front stoop of his home has arrived — complete with another cute impromptu guest appearance. Watch the family man sing “Too Many Moons” above for the first installment of a series in which he’ll be playing each album cut at a different Windy City location. (“No Place Like Home” at Montrose Beach is thataway.)

Listen: Owen – “No Place Like Home”

Mike Kinsella shared a second taste of Owen’s forthcoming Ghost Town LP recently, following up last month’s spiritual ruminations in “I Believe” with “No Place Like Home,” a gorgeous, xylophone-laced tune that makes a poignant case for leaving the past behind. Owen’s music has always felt steeped in nostalgia to me, but this one offers a refreshing take on that kind of introspection: “We don’t need to see ourselves as we are now,” he sings, “to remember where we came from.”

Ghost Town can be pre-ordered ahead of its November 8 release here.

Owen – “I Believe” (New Single)

Mike Kinsella unveiled the first single off his forthcoming Owen LP, Ghost Town, today in the form of “I Believe,” 6 minutes of spiritual longing and introspection that seems to be centered around the question at the 2:50 mark above: “Have I been saved? ‘Cause I feel the same.” Ghost Town — complete with personal live favorites “The Armoire” and “O, Evelyn” — arrives on November 8, via Polyvinyl Records.

Owen - “The Armoire” (Nervous Energies Sessions)

Owen’s Mike Kinsella performed a few solo acoustic numbers — two of which are new songs — at what’s presumably his home, given the adorable interruption of his dog, Oscar, (via barking) during “The Armoire” above. You can download the full set, which includes 2011 single “O, Evelyn,” alongside two more clips at Nervous Energies.

The latest release from Chicago’s Mike Kinsella (American Football, Cap’n Jazz) as the acoustic guitar-driven outfit Owen is a limited-edition 7” single recorded by his cousin (and Joan of Arc bandmate) Nate Kinsella called “Abandoned Bridges.” On the flip side is a stripped-down version of Wilco’s Summerteeth rocker “I’m Always In Love” — one of my personal live faves from Owen’s fellow Chicagoans.

The song’s unforgettable melodic interludes, which are echoed in an otherworldly register on a keyboard in Wilco’s version, are a perfect match for Kinsella’s love for almost-overly repeated catchy riffs, as he brings the line back to earth with an elegant folk twist that creates a pause between the verses, adding greater pensive weight to Jeff Tweedy’s lyrics. One lyric gets a particularly long pregnant pause after Kinsella switches “I forget my mother” to “I forgive my father.” Pre-order the “Abandoned Bridges” vinyl (or buy the digital version) here, listen to the A-side over on MySpace, and hear Owen’s take on “I’m Always In Love” below:
