The shimmering synth washes, melodic hooks, and big romantic chorus of “Still Life” — the first single off the Horrors’ third album, Skying — caught the attention of many back in May, and now the full LP is here to preview one month ahead of its stateside release. Upon first listen, “Still Life” remains an undeniable standout among this upbeat set from the formerly gloomy post-punk outfit, though there are plenty of other luminous moments fleshing out the collection as well. You can hear all 10 tracks above.
The Horrors have announced that their follow-up to 2009’s sophomore effort, Primary Colours, will arrive on July 26 via XL Records. Dubbed Skying, the 10-track LP was recorded and self-produced from the band’s self-built studio in London. Our first preview of the record hit the web today, as well, in the form of “Still Life,” an ’80s-style synth and tape loop-backed anthem donning one of the more accessible melodies I’ve heard from the British rock outfit that builds to a glorious, stadium-ready finish. You can stream the single here or while perusing the full tracklist below:
When The Horrors’ debut album Strange House was released a few years back, it had everything going for it: Alan Moulder and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner were among the album’s production team, singles “Sheena Is a Parasite” and “Death at the Chapel” were a favorite on MP3 blogs, and many people, including myself, thought they’d be huge. Ultimately, Strange House didn’t really top the charts and the “next big thing” buzz slowly died out too. But now that Nine Inch Nails and the Gorillaz have taken the British band under their wings, I think we may be in for another round of hype.
“Would you guys be able to come down to my studio at some point?” Damon Albarn asked in an email, according to Horrors bassist Rhys Webb in an interview with BBC 6 Music (via Exclaim).
“We went down to the studio,” Webb continued, “and [Albarn] said, ‘We’re working on the new album and we’ve not collaborated with a guitar band before and your album (Primary Colours) is one of the most exciting things I’ve heard in a long time. Would you be up for working on a track?”
The Horrors were thrilled at the invitation of course, as they’re huge Blur/Gorillaz fans, and the collaboration went forward because, as Webb said, “it made perfect sense for us.”
