Watch: Nick Zinner, Spike Jonze Creators Project Webisodes

In advance of their next multimedia art installation/rock show party in London, Vice and Intel’s Creators Project recently updated their impressive webisode page with dozens of behind-the-scenes mini-documentaries about their creators, um, creating. There are a number of notable clips here (with Diplo, Neon Indian, Animal Collective collaborator Danny Perez, etc.), but my favorite two so far feature director/skateboarder Spike Jonze and guitarist/photographer Nick Zinner.

Nick Zinner, Freshkills’ Zachary Lipez, Stacy Wakefield Announce Book, Limited 7”

Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, Freshkills singer Zachary Lipez, and art book designer Stacy Wakefield have begun taking pre-orders for their fourth collection of photographs, non-fiction, and design: Please Take Me Off the Guest List. In addition to Zinner’s concert/tour shots, the book includes Lipez-penned essays on his “adventures as a bartender, drug abuser, bookstore clerk, metal fan, miserable adolescent and relentless skirt chaser.”

Though pre-orders are fairly pricey ($50 + shipping), they do come with a few enticing treats, namely a 7” soundtrack to their work, recorded by the trio with “three different bands,” an autographed 4x6 drugstore print from Zinner’s “personal collection,” and an exclusive short story by Lipez called “My Romantic Competition Among the Stalwarts of the Goth and Cold Wave and New Music Community.” While limited pre-orders will ship on or before August August 23, non-limited copies of Please Take Me Off the Guest List will hit shelves in October via Akashic Books.

Watch Karen O + Nick Zinner Play Acoustic “Maps” at MoMA

Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O and guitarist Nick Zinner teamed up with their former touring partner/collaborator Imaad Wasif, drummer Russell Simins, and a string section for a low-key set of YYYs originals at MoMA’s Party in the Garden charity event, reports Brooklyn Vegan.

Good news for those of us who missed out on the über-intimate event: BV have shared a video of O and company playing their smash hit “Maps.” Watch it above and check out a host of excellent photos from the event here.

Trailer: Rowland S. Howard - Autoluminescent

As previously reported at the very end of last year, Rowland S. Howard, the vastly influential guitarist from the Birthday Party, the Boys Next Door, and collaborator with the likes of Henry Rollins, Lydia Lunch, and many more, passed away at the age of 50 while waiting for a liver transplant amid his fight against cancer. Now, just three months later, what looks to be a wonderful documentary about the Howard’s troubled life, influence, and legacy is on the way.

Given Howard’s estimable discography, it comes as no surprise that a handful of very famous past collaborators have offered interviews for the film, Rowland S. Howard - Autoluminescent, including Rollins Lunch, Thurston Moore, Mick Harvey, Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, and of course, the man who described Howard as “Australia’s most unique, gifted and uncompromising guitarist,” Nick Cave.

Further details about screenings or a release date for Autoluminescent are unknown at this time, but we will post an update as soon as they’re available. In the meantime, you can’t miss the over 6-minute trailer below (via Pedestrian):

Karen O Snags Grammy Nod After Miley Cyrus is Disqualified

There I was thinking last year’s Thom Yorke dissing Miley and Kanye hubbub was a good— albeit pointless—time gone by, but now Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O has stolen that very Disney-ordained dressing room which Yorke refused to visit. In a post on his collaborative “We Love You So” blog, Where the Wild Things Are director Spike Jonze forwarded an email from the soundtrack’s record label to the Internets:

“In an unexpected twist, one of the announced Grammy candidates for Best Song written for a Soundtrack has been disqualified after the fact (Miley Cyris in fact),” Interscope/Geffen/A&M dude Matt LaMotte wrote. “The nomination then goes to the song with the next-highest initial vote count, which is Karen O and the Kids’ ‘All is Love’.” They’re “working on a press release now,” LaMotte adds.

Sorry man, but the word’s already out. Congrats, Karen O and the Kids!

Moop Jaw Prep Christian Joy Documentary, Peaches Video

Even if you’ve never heard her name—yet you still pick up a glossy rock mag every so often—you’ve seen her work. Christian Joy, designer for Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O (and recently of the Klaxons), is now the subject of an upcoming documentary all about the spandex-loving Queen of Rock Sewing Machine. Well, she’s at least a runner-up for the regal position.

The documentary was shot by Rhett Wade-Ferrell of artist collective Moop Jaw; other members of the group are Warran Wright, Antuong Nguyen, and Ryan Frazer. Wade-Ferrell tells Pedestrian.tv that the collective is also “developing a collaboration with Christian Joy for a series of art films in which she will do all of the art direction so its going to be pretty mental to see her costume ideas translate into an entire world.”

Watch Karen O & Spike Jonze: Making the Where the Wild Things Are Soundtrack

Karen O’s über-hyped Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack is already available to be streamed in full, but that doesn’t mean we’re done freaking out over the project, which includes Dead Weather members Dean Fertita, Jack “Little Jack” Lawrence, and fellow Yeah Yeah Yeahs members Nick Zinner and Brian Chase.

In a fun behind-the-scenes video, which just dropped, Jonze and O give a glimpse into the making of the project, billed as Karen O And The Kids. The soundtrack was highly inspired by the Langley Schools Music Project, a critically acclaimed album of David Bowie, Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, and other covers recorded by Canadian school children.

Watch below or here, as Jonze and O reject the training of an American Idol-esque voice coach in favor of having fun with their young collaborators and throwing music scores around — literally:

New Yeah Yeah Yeahs Album Inspired by Disco, Donna Summer, and Joy Division

Lots of details about the forthcoming Yeah Yeah Yeahs album It’s Blitz! were released today, including the album cover (photo below), tracklist, and the album’s 1970s disco inspiration.

“When Karen orders, ‘No guitars for Nick!’ it makes you approach things in a different way,” guitarist/keyboardist Nick Zinner told Spin Magazine. Drummer Brian Chase said one of the album’s producers (either Dave Sitek or Nick Launay) wasn’t initially too happy with their new approach, saying “Nick, you’re the best guitarist we have in rock’n’roll right now and here you are, playing all these synths.”

Spin has an upcoming cover story on the band, but they did leak some information about the new sound, reporting that “It’s Blitz! was inspired by the ’70s disco collaborations between Italian producer Giorgio Moroder and R&B songstress Donna Summer, Joy Division, and, well, Karen O’s love of dancing.”

Here’s the tracklist/Album Cover (via Spin):

1. “Zero” (4:25/ Eric Biondo - trumpet, Stuart Bogie - saxophone)
2. “Heads Will Roll” (3:41)
3. “Soft Shock” (3:53)
4. “Skeletons” (5:02)
5. “Dull Life” (4:08)
6. “Shame and Fortune” (3:31)
7. “Runaway” (5:13 / Jane Scarpantoni - cello, Greg Kurstin - piano)
8. “Dragon Queen” (4:02 / Tunde Adebimpe - vocals, Stuart Bogie - saxophone, Kyp Malone - tambourine)
9. “Hysteric” (3:50 / Eric Biondo - trumpet, Stuart Bogie - saxophone)
10. “Little Shadow” (3:57/ Imaad Wasif - guitar)
