Karen O: “Duet”
Karen O’s Stop the Virgens, a new “psycho-opera” written by and starring the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman, premiered this month at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn. Directed by Adam Rapp — and described by O as “a psychedelic ride laced with catharsis” — the solo project features musical direction by YYYs guitarist Nick Zinner with Sam Spiegel, as well as a guest performance from drummer Brian Chase. While previews of the piece were limited to the lucky few in attendance of the live event, an interview with WNYC a few weeks back brought this stunning acoustic taste of their work. Above, hear Jason P. Grisell and O sing “Duet” live.
We first heard Karen O settle into a low-key country tune with last fall’s Roger Alan Wade-penned Jackass theme, “If You’re Gonna Be Dumb, You Gotta Be Tough,” but here she is taking on a classic: “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” a late-’70s hit (written by Jack and Patsy Bruce) for outlaw-country greats Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. O’s eery, forlorn cover arrives as the soundtrack to “Abandon,” a short video spot for Chipotle’s new American farming support organization, the Cultivate Foundation. Hear O’s cut — the latest in her consistent run of excellent non-Yeah Yeah Yeahs projects — above.
The great auteur/painter/furniture designer David Lynch has finally announced a debut solo LP, following the release of singles “Good Day Today” and “I Know” last fall. Dubbed Crazy Clown Time, his 14-track set includes the aforementioned songs alongside the title track and other wonderfully Lynchian-titled tunes, such as “The Night Bell With Lightning,” “Strange and Unproductive Thinking,” and “Pinky’s Dream.” Best of all, perhaps, the latter track features guest vocals from “Psycho-Opera” singer/Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O. In keeping with his longtime hands-on work ethic, Lynch produced and wrote all of Crazy Clown Time, due out on November 8. You can preview the tracklist and revisit the official video for “I Know” below:
Given that Karen O’s Yeah Yeah Yeahs bandmate Nick Zinner contributed to The Creators Project last summer, news of a mysterious forthcoming project from the leader of the art-rock trio for the worldwide tech/art initiative doesn’t come completely out of the blue. It does sound rather intriguing, though, as today’s announcement for an event to be held in Brooklyn’s St. Ann’s Warehouse this October notes:
Original Studio works will include the world premiere of Karen O‘s psycho-opera, an assault on the tragic joys of youth, directed by Adam Rapp [playwright/director of ‘Winter Passing’]. The premiere will take place at the critically acclaimed, St. Ann’s Warehouse.
Our first taste of Trent Reznor’s work on director David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo just arrived in the form of the highly anticipated film’s debut trailer, which is soundtracked by a new cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” produced by the Nine Inch Nails mastermind and featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O on vocals. Above, you can watch a decent leak of the clip, complete with surprisingly good audio of their thrilling take on the 1970 hit.
Santigold returns with the stunning single streaming above, in which Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O co-stars (seriously, when was the last time O hasn’t been brilliant) on the bridge, guitarist Nick Zinner guests, and the great Q-Tip lends a hand on production. In an interview alongside the track’s premiere over on Jay-Z’s new Life + Times website, Santigold says of the track’s chanting call for revolution: “On one hand it’s a challenge, beckoning any would-be usurpers to come show and prove. On the other, it’s a call to myself to rise to the occasion.”

Halloween ‘10 Slideshow: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Jack White, Mark Ronson, MGMT, Julian Casablancas…
While we wait for more fun photos to hit the Web as bands recover from their Halloween hangovers today, here are 5 of our faves so far. Please send me a tip if you find any new shots and we’ll add them to the slideshow. Photo credits are below.

Want to hear Karen O go a bit country? Of course you do: Streaming above is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman’s brand new take on Roger Alan Wade’s Jackass theme for the Spike Jonze-produced soundtrack to the forthcoming Jackass 3D flick (via SKoA).
One listen in and I can safely say that O is batting a thousand on her latest solo outings. Compare to the original below.
In just 10 days, Dave Sitek will drop his debut solo record as Maximum Balloon, but until then, the TV on the Radio member and Yeah Yeah Yeahs producer is previewing 3 tunes from the self-titled LP on MySpace. Alongside Theophilus London-featuring cut “Groove Me” and “Tiger” (with Aku) is the catchy, disco-ready jam “Communion,” in which Karen O requests, “Gimme that beat / Show your love,” via Studio 54-destined time machine.
“Communion” is the best song off Maximum Balloon I’ve heard so far, and added proof that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman’s brilliant songwriting chops are underrated, at times, in favor of citing her enthralling stage persona. Give it a spin with the other two jams here or below.
In advance of their next multimedia art installation/rock show party in London, Vice and Intel’s Creators Project recently updated their impressive webisode page with dozens of behind-the-scenes mini-documentaries about their creators, um, creating. There are a number of notable clips here (with Diplo, Neon Indian, Animal Collective collaborator Danny Perez, etc.), but my favorite two so far feature director/skateboarder Spike Jonze and guitarist/photographer Nick Zinner.
