The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon formed a new band with Ian Perkins late last year, revealing in January that “it’s the darker side of soul music, it’s slow, it slithers, and it’s raw.” Calling themselves the Horrible Crowes, the duo added that they were planning to juxtapose bright piano parts and melodies against heavier topical material for an “eerily soothing” sound. This week, Fallon and Perkins uploaded a promising 99-second preview of the result: “Black Betty & The Moon,” streaming above off their debut LP, Elsie, due out in September.
After performing American Slang standout “Boxer” (video), Brian Fallon and his New Jersey quartet, the Gaslight Anthem, stuck around on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night for a “Web Exclusive” take on one of Pearl Jam’s contributions to 1992’s epic Singles soundtrack, “State of Love and Trust.” Video of their performance is above.
Revisiting the original soundtrack just now, it’s amazing how well director Cameron Crowe encapsulated the 1992 rock scene in a jewel case, not to mention it contains “Drown,” probably my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song. (Special thanks to my sister for buying this and letting her little bro permanently borrow it back in ‘94.)
We’re only two songs into the Gaslight Anthem’s forthcoming album, American Slang, and so far, so good, boys. Don’t know how this New Jersey based quartet manages to record songs that feel like they’ve been around for years while masterfully leaning to the right side of the line between fresh jams and retro schtick, but they sure do. It’s obvious to point out that Gaslight Anthem always sound like they’re fighting for something in a post about their new single, “Boxer,” but it’s too true not to note. What are they fighting for? Perhaps to “remember that song and the reasons that we were singing for,” as Brian Fallon sings in their new tune, which is currently streaming on their MySpace page. “[The Boxer] swears some day he’s gonna find it.”
Back in February, Kasabian’s Tom Meighan made a fuss about how, in his opinion, the Internet has killed the myth of the rock star. “There’s too much on blogs now,” he ranted, “and I think it’s killed it off. There are so many rock stars writing these self-pitying blogs and it’s not in the spirit of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Well, in the first part of a new “making of” video series from New Jersey rockers the Gaslight Anthem, I think singer Brian Fallon proves that musicians can lift the curtain online without demystifying a thing.
My Twitter feed is blowing up this morning with excitement over the Gaslight Anthem’s new single, “American Slang,” our first listen to their forthcoming album of the same name. We’ve only streamed the track once so far, but it sounds like frontman Brian Fallon and friends have a solid follow-up to their breakthrough record, The ‘59 Sound, on their hands.
There’s something about buying Ryan Cabrera at Sam’s Club that makes total sense to me, but Bad Brains “Rootz Beer” and New Found Glory “Fufu Berry” just isn’t quite as appetizing.
The Daily Swarm reports that soda company Jones has partnered with PunkRadioCast and “5 of their favorite bands to bring you a special edition six pack featuring artwork from” punk pioneers Bad Brains and a couple newer bands like Thursday and Less Than Jake.
I suppose now that Henry Rollins works at NPR and Iggy Pop is an insurance spokesman, punk’s anti-capitalist posturing is kind of out the window. Besides, who said teenage angst can’t also be refreshing?
