Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince commemorate their decade as the Kills with this new official video for Blood Pressures single “The Last Goodbye,” directed by actress Samantha Morton.

“The moon makes me want to eat you alive,” sings Alison Mosshart in the Kills’ rewrite of this old Christmas tune. Hear their haunting acoustic take on “Silent Night,” which arrived today as the final installment of BBC 6’s MPFree Festive Giveaway, above.
Sons of Anarchy premiered its fourth season on FX last night, unveiling an exclusive new recording from the Kills/Dead Weather frontwoman Alison Mosshart featured on the biker gang drama’s new soundtrack: a cover of “What a Wonderful World,” the iconic optimistic tune made famous by Louis Armstrong in 1968. Above, you can stream Mosshart and the Forest Rangers’ take, which strips away the original’s evocative orchestral arrangement in favor of a bleaker acoustic backdrop, punctuated by echo-washed hints of electric guitar.
Previously: The Kills Cover Marilyn Monroe
Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince followed up their last radio session cover song premiere (a medley of two reggae songs) on Australia’s Triple J today by reviving Marilyn Monroe’s 1954 film serenade to a cowboy-filled bar, “One Silver Dollar.” While the song, which was written by Ken Darby and Lionel Newman for the 1954 western River of No Return, stays true to the original’s solo acoustic-backed arrangement, Mosshart seamlessly injects a bit more sultriness into the simple folk number. You can download the full session here and stream just the Monroe cover above.

Whether it’s performed for a sea of people, isolated to a radio station studio, or sequenced as the heartfelt centerpiece to their new LP, “The Last Goodbye” is an undeniable show-stopper among each Kills set I’ve seen. Celebrating an announcement of additional summer tour dates today, Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince pulled this fine take on the forlorn gem from their short Blood Pressures unplugged film, which strips away the original’s piano/synthesizer-backed arrangement in favor of spare acoustic strumming and a lonely whistle solo by Hince.
Of all the songs off The Kills’ fourth LP, Blood Pressures, we’ve indulged in of late — not to mention that rad reggae medley — I’ve been particularly waiting for the most opportune moment to share “The Last Goodbye,” a piano-backed ballad, which, to these ears, marks Alison Mosshart’s most heartbreaking, singular performance to date. The chemistry between Jamie Hince and VV is undeniable, but something felt just about perfect when Hotel set the guitar down and stepped out of the spotlight for her recent radio take above.
We’ve seen Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince perform a sweaty live take on this Blood Pressures cut, but — as with many rock duos — the nuances of the tune come out brilliantly unplugged and, in this case, In (Yours Truly’s) Room. Watch some beautifully-shot footage of The Kills’ intimate, candlelight and red wine-inspired take on “Baby Says” above.

The Kills not only performed an excellent reggae covers medley the other day on BBC Radio 1, but Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince also let video cameras roll for two cuts off their latest album, Blood Pressures. With all the shaky, audience-shot footage floating around the web, I can’t think of a better way to get a taste of their new material than with these intimate clips, in which Mosshart and Hince take on LP opener “Future Starts Slow” and single “Satellite,” duetting face-to-face in London’s famed Maida Vale studios (now dubbed Maida Vegas, for some reason). Those in the UK can watch here, while the rest of us can enjoy both performances below:
Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince stopped by London’s famed Maida Vale Studios yesterday for an interview with BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and performance, in which the duo wore the reggae influences of their new single “Satellite” even more on their sleeve by debuting a medley of Dawn Penn’s “You Don’t Love Me (No No No)” and Joe Higgs’ “Steppin’ Razor” (made famous by Peter Tosh). The Kills’ swampy-stomp take is excellent, as it ably abides by my #1 rule for great covers: Make the jam(s) your own. Stream the entire broadcast here or just the reggae medley above.
