Conor Oberst and friends played a headlining set at the Ottawa Folk Festival over the weekend, closing out the gig with a pair of decidedly non-folk collaborations (their second onstage team-up of the year): “Arienette” and “Road To Joy” featuring the axe work of alt-rock hero/activist Tom Morello. NJ Underground has some clips, but here’s decent front-row footage of Oberst’s glowing introduction before the Rage Against the Machine/Nightwatchman guitarist takes an inspired, blistering solo on Bright Eyes’ 2000 Fevers and Mirrors cut.
With his first solo album since 1998’s modern rock homage to Native American music, Contact from the Underworld of Redboy, former the Band guitarist Robbie Robertson will add a few more famous names to the collaboration section of his 5-decade-long rock resume. In addition to longtime friend Eric Clapton (who co-wrote 3 songs), Robertson has recruited post-’70s stars such as Trent Reznor, Robert Randolph, Tom Morello, and Taylor Goldsmith (whose band Dawes released an excellent debut last year) for How to Become Clairvoyant, a 12-track solo LP due out in April.
According to a press release, Robertson notably addresses his departure from the Band with the song “This Is Where I Get Off.” Preview a different cut, “When The Night Was Young”, here and check out the tracklist — alongside my personal favorite clip of the Band performing back in the day — below.
As we previously reported, many famous rock musicians and a songwriter for Sesame Street were outraged late last year when news broke that their music had been used to torture inmates at Guantanamo Bay. Whereas Drowning Pool’s Steve Benton said it was “an honor to think that perhaps [their] song could be used to quell another 9/11 attack or something like that,” Trent Reznor, Rage Against The Machine, and many more were understandably furious.
Now Reznor and Rage’s Tom Morello have joined the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo, along with R.E.M., Pearl Jam, the Roots, Rosanne Cash, Rise Against, Billy Bragg, and Jackson Browne, Huffington Post reports.
Seattle’s Crocodile Café reopened last weekend after being closed for a little more than a year and last night some of the original stars of the Northwest grunge scene showed up for a surprise performance at Tom Morello’s Justice Tour.
Seattle P.I. reports Kim Thayil, Ben Shepard and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden took the stage with Tad Doyle, singer of TAD, one of the first bands signed to Sub Pop Records. Travis Hay writes, “[Doyle] led the band through a three-song ‘Tadgarden’ set that included” Soundgarden’s “Nothing to Say” and “Spoonman,” with Tom Morello joining the group on guitar for the latter song.
The Crocodile Café is famous for staging early concerts for the likes of Nirvana, Mudhoney and many more legendary rock acts.
It turns out Trent Reznor has been up to a lot more than mocking Chris Cornell on Twitter: The Nine Inch Nails frontman dropped a surprise 6-song ep today, featuring 2 new Reznor-produced songs from NIN, Jane’s Addiction and Tom Morello’s new group Street Sweeper. To download the album NIN|JA in lots of different formats, click here.
The two Jane’s Addiction songs on the album, “Chip Away” and “Whores,” are new recordings, but they did already appear on the band’s live album back in 1987. The new Nine Inch Nails tracks are called “Not So Pretty Now” and “Non-Enity.” A free EP is certainly a great way for the three acts to promote their forthcoming summer tour together.
