Prince Covers “Crimson and Clover” on New Album

LA’s Indie 103 radio station was “summoned” to Prince’s house last week to preview a couple tracks from his upcoming album, where he agreed to premiere a handful of songs on Indie 103 today.

Rolling Stone reports: “The album kicks off with an explosive, four-minute instrumental before launching into the first song that was played on the radio… Prince covering Tommy James & the Shondells’ ‘Crimson & Clover,’ with the Purple One altering the lyrics as he’s been known to do during his cover performances. Keeping with the original, the vocals sound like Prince is submerged under water. Things deviate at the chorus, however, as Prince belts out the “ooh baby, I think I love you” part of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Foxy Lady’.”

Prince also gets political on the song “Colonized Mind,” saying, “Did you know your record deal was another way for ‘The Man’ to steal.”

The album has no set release date and will not be released by a record label, as Prince says he “wants nothing to do with record labels.” Tracks will likely leak on YouTube sporadically, but given Prince’s ability to have clips removed from the internet, you might need to google quite a bit to have a listen.
