The NFL Meets Nu Metal

New Dallas-based metal band Free Reign weighs literally a ton. The self-proclaimed “heaviest band in the world” includes singer Marc Colombo, right tackle for the Cowboys; bassist Leonard Davis, a 355-pound right guard for the NFL team; and Cory Procter is both Free Reign’s very able starting drummer and a 300-pound backup guard.

“You’ve Watched the Dallas Cowboys Tear Up the Field, Now Watch Them Tear Up the Stage!!” their MySpace says. “The members of Free Reign bang heads on and off the field.” We’ll add to the puns by saying their two streaming songs have all the energy of a fourth quarter blitz, but fall a few yards short of the end zone. What? Okay, I obviously know little about football.

The song “All In Vain” actually has a decent Tool-esque bass intro, but when Colombo starts screaming “goooooooo” I started laughing. They’re not taking the project too seriously, though, telling Todd Archer of the Victoria Advocate, “We get together on the weekends, and you learn to work really fast musically because football is so time-consuming,” Colombo said. “We’re keeping our goals general right now. We want to write an album before training camp.”

We’d like to suggest a new band/team name: The Weekend Warriors.
