At almost the exact same time her producer/co-writer Beck was on NBC jamming to “Free Bird” with Conan O’Brien, Will Ferrell, Ben Harper, and Billy Gibbons, Charlotte Gainsbourg was on a show that likely nobody was watching during Coco’s farewell Tonight Show episode on Friday night: CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman. So you probably missed it, but that’s what the Internet’s for, kids…
Gainsbourg doesn’t really belt out her songs, to say the least, but the song arrangement and enthusiasm from her backup band provide more than enough energy to offset the subdued, breathy vocals. (Not to mention it’s hard not to get pumped when there’s a drummer going feral on a percussion set while wearing a werewolf mask.)
