Among a few new tunes Neko Case has been previewing live in recent months and during this week’s debut of her August tour is “Calling Cards,” a short, haunting number sparsely backed by acoustic guitar and — at one show in July — a mournful trumpet solo from Calexico members. Last night, Case performed a memorable take in Charlottesville, VA, sans trumpet, proving that only she could express lyrics like “blah blah blah” in a way that is both heartfelt and poignant.
