Having never played Portal (even after the National wrote “Exile Vilify” for the video game’s sequel), many references (“aperture science,” et al.) in Jonathan Coulton’s beloved closing credits song are beyond me. Regardless, “Still Alive” remains an incredibly uplifting, relatable song that can have the odd effect of making you feel nostalgic for experiences you may have never had. This fall, Coulton released a new version of the tune with Tegan and Sara’s Sara Quin singing decidedly less robotic lead vocals than the original after a minute of celestial theremin noodling.
