The title track to the Joy Formidable’s new album, Wolf’s Law, found the trio in some less familiar territory at first by opening with a subdued piano ballad aimed toward a raucous peak, but our latest taste cuts straight to the chase. “Cholla” kicks the door open with the kind of high-energy hooks we’ve known and loved from the group, which — save for a 10-second breather around its second minute — refuses to relent amid the tune’s tight arrangement. Simply put, this is the perfect follow-up to a breakout debut, complete with plenty to love for fans of their initial output and a welcome step forward from a band destined to keep improving upon the formula.
