Not many songwriters can pull me along for 4 minutes on a 2-chord groove, but Cass McCombs managed that while defusing what could’ve been a patronizing title here on “There Can Be Only One.” All familiar with “Dreams Come True Girl” shouldn’t be surprised at how he turns the tables on the second taste of the new, 22-track LP, Big Wheel And Others. McCombs has long known how to build promise of a chorus epiphany before it becomes clear the real tune is what happens while we’re making other plans. This one finds that knack in fine form.
