“Master Hunter” has been Laura Marling’s go-to promo performance for the new record, but there’s something freshly inspired about this take for the Late Show with David Letterman earlier in the week. Even given that thousand-yard stare we’ve come to know in her live shows, she walls off the studio and broadcast audience brilliantly here, aiming the cut’s acerbic wit directly at some individual in the distance, someone out there watching the show. “You’re not sad, you live for the blues,” she smirks, breaking the gaze for a moment with an impromptu “huh”/”ha”. “I have some news…” When Letterman comes around for the credits, she’s still in another place.
