Stumbling on this Wisconsin group’s video EP over the summer was a real shot in the arm for those of us hungry to hear less self-conscious hive mind baiting and more joy in the music-making process itself. The aesthetic behind PHOX is so uncontrived, in fact, that members have disparaged the band’s own name, joked on their earnestness, and generally beaten any potential critics to the punch in one recent Q&A alone. Similarly self-deprecating quips show up in the interview portion of this clip, but only after they break out a lovely, inspired take on their song “Kingfisher” caught by just one mic for a High School class in Lawrence, Kansas.
