It’s fitting that alt-country greats like Neko Case and Jason Isbell would cap off a year of excellent LPs with a visit to Austin City Limits. The program has hosted many notable sets, but their reputation for documenting songwriters like these stands out most over the years (Wilco with Jay Bennett in ’99 comes right to mind). The spontaneous applause on Isbell’s “Cover Me Up” is a nice bit of audience-backed redemption, to name just one moment unique to the gig, but there are others as well.
