\"rockWhether it’s a healthy dose of so-called “studio magic” or the fact that many of these actors cut their teeth in musical theater, Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and other Hollywood stars proved they have the vocal chops to carry a hit Broadway play on the big screen with this weekend’s film adaptation for Rock of Ages<\/em>.<\/p>\n

For Mary J. Blige — one of the best singers alive — it was an easy feat, but even Russell Brand’s character in Forgetting Sarah Marshal<\/em>l and Get Him to the Greek<\/em> didn’t have to carry the weight of performing some of the most beloved jams of ’80s rock radio prior to this impressive effort. As for Malin Akerman, she’s in a real-life rock band and will star as Debbie Harry in the new CBGB film, so there’s no big surprise her duet with Cruise, “I Want To Know What Love Is”, pulled through as well.<\/p>\n

Speaking of Cruise, let’s not forget that long before he lip-synced and danced around in his underwear for Risky Business<\/em>, he was a high school theater kid with a bright future ranging from dangling atop skyscrapers in action films to now channeling shirtless, tattooed, hair-metal frontmen of a bygone era.<\/p>\n
