\"PerksNot unlike\u00a0director\/writer\u00a0Greg Mottola’s 2009 film\u00a0Adventureland<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower<\/em> soundtrack summons a deluge of welcome nostalgia to these ears. Given that Mottola’s film is set in 1987 while the latter takes place in the early ’90s — not to mention they both feature a David Bowie standout — that shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone following along this site for a few months. On their own, they both make fine mixtapes for the era in which my generation grew up, but combined they just might be essential to anyone born during (or after) the Clinton administration.<\/p>\n

Albeit short on grunge, Sonic Youth could be considered a forebear to that movement, which began around the time of the\u00a0Emma Watson, Logan Lerman,\u00a0Ezra Miller, and Paul Rudd-starring film. Their most renown single, “Teenage Riot,” is represented here along with early ’90s MTV favorite “Low” by Cracker. Add the Smiths’ seminal “Asleep,” New Order’s “Temptation,” and Cocteau Twins to the mix, and a handful of these should have no trouble jumping out to fresh or familiar ears. What’s more,\u00a0Chbosky integrates the song list with the screenplay seamlessly, making for one of the best soundtracks comprised of previously released material to cross our path this year so far.<\/p>\n
