Fiona Apple Enlists Charley Drayton for New Album

Fiona Apple Charley DraytonIt’s been a half-decade since Fiona Apple’s last LP, Extraordinary Machine, saw an official release, but the wait for a follow-up appears to be nearly over as yesterday’s profile on Charley Drayton by Modern Drummer contained the following exciting news:

Among Charley’s current projects is playing [on], co-producing, and mixing Fiona Apple’s upcoming record, scheduled to be released in the spring of 2011.

Drayton, a New York City-based drummer, bassist, and producer who has performed alongside a host of living legends (Neil Young, Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop), was recruited by Extraordinary Machine co-producer Mike Elizondo to perform in Apple’s 2006 touring band.

*We’ve posted some updates on this story here.

Based on her recent collaboration with Jon Brion, here’s hoping Apple worked with her longtime producer on the new record, as well. That being said, Drayton is an undeniably brilliant and versatile musician, so I can’t wait to hear what the pair have cooked up in the studio. Until then, check out a live clip of the pair rocking “Fast As You Can” below.
