Wilco, Woody Guthrie – The Jolly Banker

Wilco Woody GuthrieWilco first shared their take on this Depression-era protest tune to raise funds for the Guthrie archives back in 2009, appropriately following up last fall in light of recent events with a free stream of the satirical jab. Now “The Jolly Banker” is set to arrive in an official format alongside 16 other previously unreleased recordings culled from the band’s Mermaid Avenue sessions with Billy Bragg. In honor of Woody’s ongoing centennial celebration and this April’s box set, revisit one of the most cutting waltz-time folk tunes still kicking above.

Wilco: “Misunderstood” Live (Time-Lapse Video)

Revisiting “Misunderstood” — a tune that never fails to make a Wilco show feel special — would be a welcome treat regardless, but throw some time-lapse photography depicting a trip to one hometown gig into the mix and I’m completely on board. Richie Wireman shot a host of images revolving around the band’s Civic Opera House concert in Chicago last December, shown here with a soundboard recording of said live favorite as the soundtrack. Watch/hear Wilco perform “back in [their] old neighborhood” above.
