Painter Norton Wisdom, who has collaborated with dozens of musicians, writers, and artists over the years, including Beck, Dave Navarro, Saul Williams, Daniel Lanois, Mavis Staples, Flea, Mike Watt, Kris Kristofferson, and many more, teamed up with Wilco lead guitarist/solo artists Nels Cline last year for a filmed live collaboration at Los Angeles venue The Smell. Directed by Aeght Nign, Wisdom and Cline’s “afternoon of sonic and visual improvisation” is now available on DVD (trailer below).
The film, titled Stained Radiance, includes two improvised performances in which Cline reacts to Wisdom’s brush strokes and Wisdom reacts to Cline’s effects-laden soundscapes. “It’s not about finger wiggling so much on the guitar, and I’m not trying to create instantaneous compositions,” Cline says in the trailer. “It’s really more about grand swaths of sound.” Also included on the DVD release is bonus footage from Wisdom’s “shoulder cam” and “helmet cam.”
