Fostex RP MK3: Classic Headphones Get a Makeover

Fostex RP MK3We’ve featured many studio photos and behind-the-scenes clips at 24B over the years, and there’s one consistent appearance you may have noticed among them: Fostex headphones. Sure, that’s the angle pushed by the company as well, but it really is true. These things have been the go-to tracking cans in legendary rooms for decades (including at my not-so-legendary home setup). We could go on and on, but let’s cut to the chase…

Fostex are releasing the next major revision of the classic headphones, following up their original T series, the RP series, and the RP MKII series with the aptly titled MK3. In addition to the updated appearance shown above, Fostex improved just the parts of these cans that needed it, namely the ear pads, headband, and housing. The updated housing is said to expand upon the performance of the original RP driver.

While this is not a completely overhaul, those of us who love the RP line to begin with are relieved that they’ve left the core quality of the headphones intact. Many brands boast flat frequency response, et al., but in my experience our Fostex T-50’s manage to bring both an honest representation of the mix and a pleasing sound to keep the muse inspired, where some other “flat” cans are harsh and not as intended for enjoying music. Simply put, you can mix, track, and jam out with the Fostex RPs. And yes, this is completely unsolicited praise. Can’t wait to try these things out.
