Arctic Monkeys’ Olympics Performance

Arctic Monkeys Olympics PerformanceTonight was the opening ceremony for the 2012 summer Olympic Games in London, England, featuring performances by Sir Paul McCartney, Arctic Monkeys and many more. Though an actual former Beatle was present to perform one of their most beloved hits, “Hey Jude,” the Arctic Monkeys’ & Co. offered up their own homage to the great British quartet. In addition to playing the breakout single from their debut LP, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, they did Abbey Road opening track “Come Together,” complete with Turner donning a John Lennon-esque coif — a nod to the iconic style of early rockabilly musicians.

With the stadium lights low, winged glow-in-the-dark performers help set the mood for the classic cut, which included a healthy dose of reverence to the original while retaining enough of the trademark Arctic Monkeys sound to give both bands their due for millions of viewers.

Official video footage of both songs hasn’t been made available by the Olympics just yet, but in the meantime, audio of the Beatles cover surfaced:
